ABOUT ME

I have been painting now for about 20 years and I love it.  Before that I ran my own pottery business, making figurines and cottages by hand on a theme of fairy tales and Victorian life.

I work in various mediums:  acrylic, oil, watercolour and mixed media.  My sketchbooks are mainly water colour with added pencil work.  I prefer to paint outside in the landscape, but if this is not possible I work in my studio from sketches and photographs. I try to capture the magical effect that light (or the absence of it) produces.

I like my work to look bright and contemporary.  Apart from landscapes, I like to tell a story.

LATEST NEWS

2023

Two exhibitions are planned so far for this year:

Studio Three Gallery, Clevedon Craft Centre 12th April to 9th May

Porthole Gallery Clevedon Pier: 28th April to 8th May.

2022

I am currently working as a part time tutor locally for Seasons Art.

My first exhibition of the year is at Studio 3 Gallery, part of Clevedon Craft Centre and this finishes on March 6th. I am showing a selection of old and new work.  Open daily.

2021

Well, this year I have been trying to get back to normal (a bit).  It started with an exhibition in Cheddar at the Arts Quarter.  This was in conjunction with my cousin, Linda Challis, a pastel artist from Swansea.

After that, it was North Somerset Arts Week and I decided to exhibit from my studio in Banwell.  After clearing out all of the junk (!!!) it looked very nice.  We had quite a few visitors and I made some new friends and a few sales. (see picture on the left)

2020

This has been a difficult year with all exhibitions and classes being cancelled due to Covid 19.

I have been experimenting with more abstract landscapes in addition to producing a series of  bright landscapes based on local walks during Lockdown. I am planning to participate in North Somerset Arts online exhibition in October this year.

Five years ago, I completed the degree course at University Centre Weston, obtaining a first class honours degree in Contemporary Art with Professional Studies.

Immediately after the degree show at college I organised a solo exhibition,  'The Mists of Time' at The Old Town Quarry, Weston super Mare.

In 2019 I participated in various exhibitions including North Somerset Arts Week and Alumni Students at The Sovereign Centre, Weston super Mare.  I started teaching small group classes in painting (Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour and Collage).

In addition to this I was inspired to complete a collage about Bristol Zoo after hearing that they still had the polar bear (Mischa) on their premises (stuffed).  The collage was about the zoom past and present and I discovered many very interesting facts, including body snatching and jilting at the alter!

I also tested a course in Psychogeography for the Open Coillege of the Arts, which resulted in a new body of work, including some poetry, lots of photography, collage and paintings.
